Music's in the Air

With the Shenzhen Concert Hall freshly opening last month, local audiences were happy to see a succession of superb musicals by famous musicians such as pianist Lang Lang, violinist Lv Siqing and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.
But that was just a warm-up compared to this month as the open season begins. On November 3, there comes Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer. Growing up in a musical household, 60-year-old Kremer is an accomplished performer and a missionary of music. Later on November 17, the Inner Mongolia Youth Glee Club presents the "White Cloud in Hometown - unaccompanied chorus concert" using unique Mongolian singing techniques. Joint performances between the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and many domestic as well as foreign musicians - the "Paradisiac Paean" symphony concert on November 23, and a cooperation with conductor Angbel Hortas and pianist Olive Triendl on November 30 are recommended.
Another marathon-like stage event not to be missed is the "Shenzhen Performance Season 2007."At the Shenzhen Grand Theater, starting on November 2 and 4 there is the epic opera, Orpheus und Eurydike. Its presenter, the Nuremburg State Theater established in 1905, is regarded as one of the best theaters in Germany. Also from Germany, versatile pianist/conductor Ratko Delorko will perform on November 10. Led by Chinese comedian Guo Donglin and Canadian actor Mark Roswell (better known as "Da Shan"), the drama, The Dinner Game, from November 16 to 17 is a local version of French playwright Francis Veber's popular comedy. For light music fans, make sure to catch a performance by Dutch musician Danny Malando and his orchestra at the Shenzhen Citizen Center.
From music to art, the "The Star's Times - contemporary exhibition by Huang Rui" at the He Xiangning Art Museum until the 11th offers a glimpse into China's unstable artistic climate 20 years ago. At the same venue, an exhibition spanning from November 30 to January 6 will showcase many of the winning works from the "Graphic Design in China 2007" competition. Although small-scale, the "Contemporary British Photographic & Video Art Exhibition" at the Shenzhen Art Museum until November 17 definitely deserves a visit. Those who fancy Cantonese culture will be interested to see the "Cantonese Folk Art Exhibition" at the Shenzhen Museum until January 13.
Movie lovers who favor French director Louis Malle will love to watch a collection of the "New Wave" master's important works at the Shangshu Ba every Saturday.
