Premier Wen Inspects Guangdong, Calling for Continues Growth

Premier Wen Jiabao has said "unswerving confidence and arduous work are needed to achieve a steady and relatively fast economic development and to check soaring consumer prices". His remarks came last weekend during his visit to Guangdong province. He visited steel, shoes and high-tech enterprises in Guangzhou, Dongguan and Shenzhen to learn about the developments in their production and sales.

Top Party Leader Receives Hong Kong Media Delegation

Secretary of Guangdong CPC Committee Wang Yang met with senior officials from 16 Hong Kong media groups in Guangzhou Tuesday (July 22). Our journalist Zhangbin has more:

While exchanging opinions with the delegation at a meeting, Wang said some companies in the Pearl River Delta are confronting some difficulties, which is unavoidable during Guangdong's industrial restructure. However, the government is talking some measures to help them out of their plight.

"We are transferring industries to eastern, western and northern Guangdong, where production cost is lower. In the next couple of years, we plan to allocate up to 40 billion yuan (5.7 billion USD) to offer favorable policies, such as subsidized electricity."

Wang also recognized Hong Kong media's efforts in promoting cooperation between the two sides. He called on the media on both sides to work closer and "begin a new chapter" for friendly bilateral cooperation.

Guangzhou Launches New Insurance Scheme Covering all Citizens

As of Tuesday (July 22) Sixty-three thousand of Guangzhou citizens received medical insurance cards, becoming the first batch of people who benefit from the new insurance scheme. The new scheme guarantees that, in addition to urban employees, minors, students, unemployed adults and farmers are also entitled to basic medical insurance. Our reporter Liang Chun Mei has more:

At the card inauguration ceremony, as the disable representative, Mrs. Zheng from Yuexiu District was holding her medical insurance card delightfully.

"The government really takes care of us. It offers help to us so that we don't have to spend large sums of money for medical treatment in the future."

Cui Renquan, the director general of Guangzhou Labor and Social Insurance Department, informed the public about the implementation of the new insurance scheme.

"Up to 18th this month, more than 157,000 residents have been confirmed as insured. Most of them are young persons, the olds and disabled, a group who indeed need to receive certain assurances."
