Central government and HK government demanded thorough investigation in Manila shooting Eight Hong Kong tourists were killed in a shooting after their tour bus was hijacked in Manila, the capital of the Philippines on Monday (23rd). The Hong Kong government immediately flew the families of the victims to Manila as well as officials and doctors to help in the aftermath. Both the Hong Kong and Chinese mainland governments have demanded a thorough investigation into the shooting. The President of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino presented to China's ambassador the preliminary investigation into the hostage saga on Tuesday (24th) and said the country's Vice-President and Foreign Secretary will fly to Beijing and Hong Kong to present their final report upon completion. On Wednesday (25th), the police officer who handled the hostage crisis as well as four members of the SWAT team were relieved from their posts to make way for an impartial investigation.

2010 Book fair's attendance reaches a high The 2010 Guangzhou book fair ended on Wednesday (Aug 25th). The week-long event saw a record number of visitors, at over 700,000. Our journalist Luo Su has the details: This time, the layout of the fair was improved compared with past years: 26 areas were set up according to book categories, and a family meeting area was created for parents who lose their children.
