The last phase of the 106th Canton Fair, China's import and export barometer, open on Saturday (Oct 31st), displaying costumes, food, and pharmaceutical products. With the global economy on a slow path towards recovery, the recently-concluded second phase of the fair which ended on Tuesday(Oct 27th) saw sales grow compared to spring. More from our reporter, Yang Zhen:
Liu Xuewu is a manager in charge of exports at the Shenzhen company, Yongfengyuan. He was happy to see increases in orders.
"Basically, exports are beginning to return to normal and we have received a considerable number of visitors. Up until now, we've signed deals worth several million US Dollars, approximately a 20% rise compared with the last section."
This has given optimism to many who hope to see the ongoing Canton Fair preserve this momentum.

A delegation led by Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua visited Australia this week to boost the cooperation ties in various areas. On the occasion of the 23rd Guangdong-New South Wales Economic Meeting on Monday(Oct 26th),  the two sides signed a statement in which they agreed to deepen cooperation and find new channels to cooperate in areas such as energy, technology, education, environmental protection and so on. On Tuesday(Oct 27th) while in Sydney the Guangdong delegation clinched deals worth over 6.2 billion U.S. Dollars at the Guangdong Hong Kong Australia Cooperation Conference. The meeting was the largest in recent years in terms of scale and transaction volume held between China and Australia. Over 500 people from Guangdong attended the meeting.

China's Nasdaq-style GEM Starts trading
Starting Friday(Oct 30th), the first batch of 28 firms listed on China's Nasdaq-style Growth Enterprises Market (GEM). These companies had undergone a full review after the GEM was launched on Oct 23rd. Shang Fulin, the chairman of the Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission, the country's top industry watchdog, warned that GEM companies are more exposed to market manipulation, and that these companies are vulnerable in the face of market risks, as they are relatively small compared with companies on the main board.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke Urged IPR Protection in China
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke visited Guangdong this week, a place of some important not only for commerce, but also because it is where this Chinese-American citizen originally came from. Wang Yang, Secretary of Guangdong CPC Committee received him. Later while attending a forum, Gary addressed the issue of China's protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Our journalist Zheng Yun has the details:
Attending the Pearl River International Forum on Innovation and Intellectual Property in Guangzhou on Tuesday (October 27), Gary Locke called on the Chinese government to enact and enforce IPR policies, which he believes are the key to China's industrial upgrade.

On Monday (Oct 26th) in Guangzhou, the Guangdong Government, Sinopec and the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation co-signed a memorandum of understanding in which they agreed to work together in the construction of a chemical refinery plant which is to be build on Donghai Island, near the city of Yangjiang.


GD's A/H1N1 Vaccine Inoculation Campaign Starts Earlier
An official from the Guangdong Health Department announced on Tuesday(Oct 27th) that the provincial A/H1N1 vaccine inoculation campaign officially begins. More from our reporter Zhao Zhaoyi:
Yao Zhibing, the Director-General of the department, give the details concerning the inoculation plan:
"The inoculation campaign will first begin in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, then the Pearl River Delta and later the entire Province. The plan was made focusing on high risk areas at first to avoid an epidemic."
Hospital staff as well as civil servants working in public undertakings will be the first to receive the vaccine.

Overseas Majors will Join in One-year Countdown Celebration
Mayors and representatives from overseas cities will be invited to attend the big celebration marking the one-year countdown to Guangzhou Asian Games on November 12. The celebration will coincide with two major international events in Guangzhou, including the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Council 2009 and the Sister Cities Conference 2009. Over 600 deputies to the UCLG from 80 countries and over 20 mayors and representatives of Guangzhou's sister cities will gather in Guangzhou next month. The organizers believe it shall be a good opportunity to promote the Asian Games.

Taiwan Beer becomes Asian Games Official Partner
Taiwan Beer became an official partner of the Guangzhou Asian Games after signing an agreement in Beijing yesterday (October 27). Taiwan Beer officially entered the mainland market this May and has started doing business in cities like Fujian, Shanghai and Tianjin. So far, GAGOC has signed cooperation agreements with 33 sponsors, the most in the Games' history.
