Jan-July: Added value for industrial enterprises jumps 16% In the first 7 months of this year, the added value created by Guangdong's industrial enterprises above a designated size (i.e. all state-owned enterprises plus non state-owned enterprises with an annual sales income of over 5 million yuan) increased by 16 percent. A government conference on the industrial economy held yesterday (August 25) showed that in the first 5 months, profit reached 146.2 billion yuan, up 66%. However, Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua pointed out that the domestic and overseas situation trend will continue to remain difficult. Efforts must be made to adjust and upgrade industrial structure so as to maintain economic growth. He stressed that the performance of the industrial economy should be included into the appraisal criteria of local governments and leaders.
Celebration held to Mark 30th anniversary of SEZ Today (August 26) marks the 30th anniversary of the initiative to build coastal "special economic zones" (SEZs). Shenzhen, Shantou, Zhuhai and Xiamen were amongst the earliest experiments, planned by Deng Xiaoping, the architect of the Chinese reform and opening-up. The aim was to connect and to eventually integrate China into the global economy. In Shenzhen, a series of celebrations are being held, including exhibitions, firework shows and the opening of a memorial park. Yesterday, Shenzhen started construction on 60 big projects with a total investment of over 100 billion yuan, a special tribute to the 30th anniversary.
Eight HK slain tourists returned home Yesterday (August 25), a charter flight brought home the bodies of the eight Hong Kong victims of the bus hijacking which occurred in the Philippines this week. The Hong Kong government announced that today (Aug 26) would be a day of mourning and three minutes of silence were observed at 8 am.
