China to mourn quake victims

To mourn the victims of the strong earthquake which occurred in Qinghai Province last week, tomorrow (April 21) national flags will fly at half-mast across the country and at embassies and consulates abroad. What's more, to express condolences to the families of the victims, public entertainment will also be suspended. As of 8 p.m. yesterday (April 19), the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu last Wednesday, had killed more than 2,000. 195 people were still missing.


CCTV Puts on Live Charity Show tonight
Tonight at 8 PM, CCTV, the national television station will broadcast a special charity show to collect donations for the regions hit by the earthquake in Qinghai province. 300 celebrities from across all fields will participate.


School attacker's death sentence upheld
The death sentence which was handed down to the perpetrator of an attract in a primary school which led to the death of eight children whilst injuring five others, was upheld during a second trial held this morning (April 20) in Nanping, Fujian province. Zheng Minsheng, 41, admitted in court on April 8 that he "intentionally" killed the children at the gate of the Nanping Experimental Elementary School on March 23.


10 Hidden rules of Consumption unveiled

Guangdong's consumers' commission today (April 20) unveiled the "10 hidden rules" that consumers frequently encounter according to consumer complaints and media reports. These cases include restaurants refusing to provide invoices, Internet shopping scams, tourists forced to pay more for tour packages and so on. Officials from the commission said exposing these cases would remind consumers to pay attention and help push forward legislation.


First phase of 107th Canton Fair Concludes
Yesterday (19th), the first phase of the 107th Canton Fair, which was displaying electronic appliances, chemical products, machinery and so on, came to an end. For this phase, exhibitors from the Guangdong pavilion saw business increase by 20% compared to last year. The second phase of the fair will begin this Friday and 6,884 exhibitors will be presenting consumer goods, gifts and home decorations. Hopefully the cloud of volcanic ashes currently grounding European planes will dissipate in time.
