HK Universities could Set up Campuses in GD

The Guangdong Education Department last night (7th) said that they are considering allowing Hong Kong universities to set up campuses in Guangdong, under the guidance of the newly-signed Guangdong-Hong Kong Structural Cooperation Agreement. The education department also said that more exchange programs amongst university students will be created.


New Specific Rules on Residence Permit Application Laid out

Yesterday (7th), a provincial government meeting laid out new specific rules for migrant workers to apply for residence permits. Vice-Governor Li Ronggen specifically pointed out that institutions should simplify the application procedure and that existing preconditions such as hefty taxes should be scrapped. So far Guangdong has issued over 11 million residence permits to migrant workers.


Death Toll Reaches 9 in Tragic Wangjialing Coal Mine Accident

As of 6 pm yesterday (7th), the death toll in Shanxi Province's tragic Wangjialing coal mine accident amounted to 9 people. Rescuers are still trying to save the remaining 29 miners trapped by continuously pumping water out of the mine. The 115 miners rescued earlier this week are still being treated in hospital but they are no longer in a critical condition.
