Water from GD to Relieve Drought in Yunnan and Guizhou Southwestern China is currently suffering from a once-in-a-century drought, with the provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region amongst the most severely hit regions. Some 16 million people lack drinking water and analysts put the direct loss from the drought at 19 billion yuan ($2.79 billion). 4 trucks carrying 220 tons of water from Guangdong are now on the way to Yunnan and Guizhou and shall arrive early tomorrow morning (March 25). The Guangdong Charity Federation is appealing to the public for donations to help regions in need; details are available on the federation's official websites.

Organic waste treatment plant put into operation Guangzhou's first organic waste treatment plant which shall collect waste from some of the city's restaurants was put into use yesterday (March 23). Our journalist Zhao Zhaoyi has the details: In the factory, we witnessed the waste being transformed into dry, small and round pellets. A technician told us: " during the process, one ton of waste is transformed into 250 to 350 kilograms of animal-feed. "
A representative from the company that sells these machines told us that this recycled material has now become a valuable product. " this animal feed can be used to raise chickens, pigs, ducks and even fish and crabs. "
The Guangzhou urban management commission said that if the trail is a success, 3 to 5 treatment plants will be set up throughout the city.
