Guangdong and Thailand Seal 1.7 b USD deals Guangdong and Thailand signed a package of projects worth 1.7 billion USD yesterday (November 10) in Bangkok during the 2009 Guangdong-Thailand Economic and Trade Cooperation Conference. The secretary of the Guangdong CPC Committee Wang Yang, who led the delegation, said the main purpose of his visit was to strengthen understanding between Thailand and the province before the founding of the China-ASEAN free trade zone on January 1st. Guangdong has encouraged its companies to invest in Thailand, whether it be in sectors related to electronics, telecommunications, textile, infrastructure, mining, agriculture, and tourism.
 Industrial Restructuring and Rejuvenation Program Announced Guangdong Government has approved the industrial restructuring and rejuvenation program for light industries, textile, nonferrous metal and construction materials. At a government meeting presided over by Governor Huang Huahua, it was stressed that the program aims to develop brand-name products for household appliances, food products and paper manufacturing. Authorities hope to see these industries achieve an annual growth of 10% between 2009 and 2011. The meeting also called on using technology and innovation to develop the textile industry and set a target of 10% in annual growth.
