China raises gasoline, diesel prices The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced they raised gasoline and diesel prices last night at midnight by 480 yuan (70.28 U.S. dollars) per ton. The price of gasoline stands at 7,100 yuan a ton and that of diesel at 6,360 yuan a ton. Translated into what users are going to experience, that's a rise of 0.36 yuan per liter for gasoline and a rise of 0.41 yuan per liter for diesel. That is the sharpest increase so far this year after prices have already risen 5 times: bad news for drivers, but hopefully good news for the environment.

Polluting Projects Banned from Pearl River Delta Guangdong has ordered a halt to any further expansion of three major polluting industries in the Pearl River Delta. Mr. Chen Guangrong, the deputy director of the provincial bureau for environmental protection said it would reject applications for any new cement, ceramics and plate glass production facilities. The bureau will also refuse planning permissions to expand existing facilities and close plants that fail to meet environmental protection requirements.
