One missing, more than 1 million affected as typhoon Koppu hits S China

In Zhuhai, one person is missing and across the province more than a million inhabitants have been affected by typhoon Koppu after it hit Guangdong yesterday (September 15), causing an economic loss of over 600 million yuan. The Guangdong Flood and Drought Relief Headquarters said over 1 million people in 69 townships in Jiangmen and Yangjiang have been affected. In Shenzhen, 169 flights were delayed yesterday, stranding nearly 10,000 passengers. The typhoon, the 15th this year, has brought heavy rain to Guangdong. China's central observatory said that during the next two days, Koppu would bring heavy rain to most parts of southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hainan and Guangdong.

Law will guarantee journalists' right to know
Top government officials in Shenzhen now face getting the sack if they do not answer journalists nor release details about government affairs to the media. This new regulation will take effect on Dec 1. The regulation - the first of its kind in Chinese mainland - mandates that government spokes people be accountable to the media. Government press officials said this will protect journalists' legal rights to have access to government officials and help guarantee citizens' right to information.

100,000 yuan award to name Guangzhou's new TV tower
People around the world are invited to take part in a competition to name Guangzhou's new 610 meter-high TV tower, the third tallest structure in the world after Burj Dubai and a TV mast in the US. The campaign started today (September 16) and will end on October 9th. The name should be in Chinese, with no more than 5 characters. It should reflect cultural characteristics and identify the tower as the city's new landmark. The winner will be awarded 100,000 yuan and the results will be announced on November 12th to mark the one-year countdown to the Guangzhou Asian Games.
