Typhoon Koppu cost Huge lost Typhoon Koppu swept across most of Guangdong today, bringing strong winds up to gale force 15 and heavy rainstorms. The typhoon, the 15th this year, landed at around 7:00 a.m. in the town of Beidou in Taishan, with winds of up to 50.4 meters per second at its eye. It has seriously damaged crops, roads, houses, and water facilities, leading to a huge economic losses in many cities. Koppu continued to move northwest, passing through Yangjiang and Maoming during the day. It's forecast to enter Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region later this evening.
Foreign investment in China up 7% in August The Ministry of Commerce reported Today (September 15) that foreign direct investment in China rebounded in August, rising 7% from a year earlier after plunging over the previous two months. Ministry spokesman Yao Jian said at a news conference that investment in manufacturing and other nonfinancial assets totaled $7.5 billion in August. But the figure does not include stocks and other financial assets. The growth compares with declines of 35.7% in July and 6.8% in June.
Water Control Project Launched in Shaoguan A water control project began construction today (September 15) in Shaoguan's Lechang city, aimed at reducing the risk of floods in northern Guagndong. Construction of the 340 million cubic meter reservoir shall be completed by 2012.

New space center takes giant leap forward China began work Monday on a new spacerocket launch center in Wenchang city in the northeast of the tropical island-province of Hainan, laying the groundwork for the nation's more sophisticated space program. The Hainan Space Launch Center, the fourth in China, will be finished by 2013 and should be capable of launching 10 to 12 vehicles a year.
