Work on Metro Line-5 Going Smoothly According to Guangzhou's metro operator yesterday (Aug 23rd), all the different sections of the new line 5 were connected together, nearly one month earlier than originally scheduled. Trial operations will be undertaken in the coming months to guarantee the line opens to the public on time, at the end of the year. The new line five stretches from the east to the west of the city, putting residents on the outskirts of Guangzhou, only half an hour away from the central business areas.

Droughts Expected in Guangdong According to the Chinese lunar calendar, yesterday was the supposedly the last day this summer of dramatically high temperatures. The end of the summer usually also comes with the end of rain for at least a few months. A report released by the Guangdong Hydrological Bureau said the Dongjiang River and the Hanjiang River are threatened to experience serious droughts as the dry season approaches. Hydrological experts have warned that precautions need to be taken to conserve water for the winter and spring. Another serious matter of concern is the prediction that in the second half of august, the average rainfall will drop by 20 to 40% compared with the same period last year.
