156 of Urumqi riot Deaths Confirmed to be Innocents Xinjiang authorities confirmed Wednesday that innocent by passers accounted for 156 of the 197 deaths that occurred in the Urumqi riots one month ago. Hou Hanmin, spokesman for the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Government, said that out of the 156 dead civilians, 134 were Han, 11 were Hui, 10 were Uygurs, and one was Man. Twelve others were shot dead whilst committing violence or criminal activities. The identities of the remaining dead are said to unknown. Hou also denied foreign media reports that an associate professor at Beijing's Minzu University has been detained in connection with the riots.

Tourism to Islands in Western Guangdong Suspended GONI, the typhoon that hit Taishan yesterday (Aug 5th) has seriously affected tourism to western Guangdong's island resorts, with trip suspended,affecting around 1000 tourists. Tour groups are scheduled to resume over the weekend (Aug 7th).
Fluorescent Mice Exhibition in GZ Guangzhou Zoo and Sun Yat Sen University are co-hosting a highly debatable exhibition showing trans-genic fluorescent mice. The show started yesterday (Aug 5th) and presents 4 mice that appear fluorescent green under a purple fluorescent light. These mice were bred in a laboratory in Sun Yat Sen University, using the research results from the Nobel Prize Winners: Roger Yonchien Tsien, Martin Chalfie and Osamu Shimomura.
