Guangzhou to Speed up Its Major Project Construction Pace In the second half of the year, Guangzhou will exert greater efforts to speed up the pace of major construction projects so as to reach its goal of a 10% annual economic growth rate in 2009. More from our reporter, Wang Jianpin: Guangzhou's major construction projects for 2009 include those in the automobile industry, electronic industry, new energies and the construction of 1.5 million square meters of exhibition space. The Secretary of Guangzhou's CPC Committee, Zhu Xiaodan said: "In the first half of this year, we saw a economic growth rate of 8.5%. To reach a 10% economic growth rate by the end of this year, we must do two things: to speed up the revival of the industry and to narrow the decrease in exports. At the moment these two aspects are looking very positive."
Linhe Zhong Lu Tunnel Put into Use Today A new tunnel, named Linhe Zhong Lu Tunnel, was officially opened to traffic today (Jul 31st) in Guangzhou. The tunnel is the latest addition to Guangzhou's traffic network and should greatly relieve pressure on Tianhe's major axis. Linhe Zhong Lu Tunnel will later be connected with Linhe Xi Lu Tunnel which is still under construction.

Guangdong's First Batch of Educational Bases for National Defence Named The first batch of Guangdong's educational bases for national defence were officially named this morning. The ceremony took place in Martyrs' Park in Guangzhou, where the director of the Guangdong CPC Committee's Publicity Department, Lin Xiong, urged for more campaigns to be held to promote patriotism amongst the public. These first centers include sites such as Huangpu Military Academy and Panyu National Defense Education and Training Base.
China Southern Airlines Apply 2-Dimensional Bar Code to Flight-Boarding Starting tomorrow (Aug 1st), passengers leaving Guangzhou and boarding China Southern Airlines' domestic flights will save a considerable amount of time by no longer needing to wait in line to get their boarding passes. From now on, customers can simply use a 2-dimensional bar code sent to their cell-phones to have it scanned when they enter the boarding area. This service has been on trial on certain flights since April, proving itself reliable and therefore now being implemented on a larger scale.
