Radio Guangdong Launches a Commemoration Event as the 1st Anniversary of Sichuan Earthquake The first anniversary of the Sichuan Earthquake will be marked tomorrow (May 12), with different activities being held throughout the country to mourn the dead and help in post-disaster construction. Radio Guangdong has also launched a special commemoration event. Our journalist Lai Lingling was at the inauguration ceremony. A yellow ribbon is a symbol often associated with those waiting for the return of a loved one or of military troops who are temporarily unable to come home. This year, Radio Guangdong is giving out 100,000 yellow ribbons for drivers to tie to their cars to show their respect to the Sichuan victims. Tomorrow, the station's traffic channel will broadcast special programs around the clock to mark the anniversary. Zhang Jun is the director of the Traffic Channel and he told us about the preparations: "With the yellow ribbon, we want to convey the respect of all Cantonese people for those who died or suffered in Sichuan. We also want to encourage Cantonese people to continue contributing to post-disaster construction. "

Mother's Day Celebrated in Town Yesterday was Mother's Day in China and in a couple of other countries around the world. The celebration brought another golden weekend for consumption and it seems like mums got a good deal this year. Figures from major travel agencies show that over 50,000 citizens travelled during the weekend, whilst sales in major department stores jumped by about 10%. And of course, it wouldn't be China if their wasn't a great meal to go with every celebration, so naturally long queues appeared in front of the most famous restaurants.
