Various Lantern Festival Performances to Be Held in Guangdong Tonight
Today (February 9) is Lantern Festival or Yuan Xiao Festival that marks the last day of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Performances will be put on in various cities of Guangdong. In Gaoming, a large-scale fireworks display will be displayed. Lasting for 21 minutes, it will be accompanied by festive dances and acrobatic performances. An even larger firework display will be put on along Chaozhou's Hanjiang River, featuring over 13,000 fireworks. In Shunde will host a lion dance and in Nanhai, a special "lettuce party", with a lettuce feast to wish for good luck in the new year.

Nation's Largest Oil Refinery Base to Be Built in Maoming, Guangdong
Sinopec Maoming is to build a 20 million ton oil refinery this year and the construction is expected to be completed in 2011. At that time, it shall become the nation's largest oil refinery base, refining up to 25.5 million tons of oil per year. The new oil refinery is expected to bring Maoming at least 50 billion Yuan in output value and 10 billion Yuan in tax per year.


Guangzhou's Yuexiu District Issues New Measures to Recollect New Year Garbage
With the Lantern Festival marking the last day of the Chinese New Year celebrations, large amounts of "new year garbage", i.e. withered pots of mandarin trees and peach blossoms, starts to litter streets and alleys. In order to avoid second-time pollution and to keep the city clean, Yuexiu District in Guangzhou has set up almost 70 spots to collect waste. Two to three spots can be found in every street and for a small fee ranging between 3 and 5 yuan, a door-to-door garbage pick-up service will also be set-up. Furthermore, six additional garbage compressing vehicles will be put into operation in the coming days.

Chinese Shares Continue Upward Trend Upon Signs of Economic Recovery
Chinese equities continued to climb today upon signs of an economic recovery, government policies to boost industries and a strong performances from the U.S. capital market. The Shanghai A-share index rose 1.99 percent, to close at 2,224 points, whilst the Shenzhen Component Index went up 4%, to 8087 points.
