A Series of Economic Statistics Were Announced This Morning(Jan 22nd).
China's 2008 economy slowed down in seven years as the global financial crisis continued to affect the world's fastest-growing economy. Ma Jiantang, head of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said, the country's Gross domestic product (GDP) reached over 30 trillion yuan in 2008, merely 9% growth, its lowest level since 2001 and the first time China's GDP growth fell to single-digits since 2003. Again, statistics also showed that the CPI growth rate was of 5.9%, a record high for the past 12 years.
Flower Markets in Guangzhou to Open Tomorrow
The Xihulu flower market will be illuminated tonight as a test run for tomorrow's opening. Tomorow at 10am, the Yuexiu flower market will hold an opening ceremony with various entertainments and performances, and all ten of Guangzhou's flower markets will officially open their gates (Jan 23). The authorities in charge of the markets said that there will be a total of 3262 booths.
Strong Cold front to Hit Guangdong Tomorrow
A strong cold front entered northern China yesterday (Jan 21) and it is expected to hit Guangdong tomorrow (Jan 23). Under the influence of the cold front, Guangdong will experience a severe northern wind and an abrupt drop in temperatures on Thursday and Friday. The temperatures are expected to drop by a maximum of 10 degrees in the north and 8 degrees in other areas of the province.
Automated People Mover System to Complete Construction before The
Asian Games Begin
In Zhujiang New Town, an Automated People Mover (APM) system is expected to enter into operation before the Asian Games begin next year. The APM is a fully-automated, grade-separated mass transit system generally used to serve small areas such as airports or downtown districts. It utilizes special rubber tyres and runs on concrete tracks to reduce noise whilst improving comfort. The APM system in Zhujiang New Town is being built underground and by the time construction is completed, it will be 3.94 kilometers long with 9 stations.
