Uzbekistan's Djeparov wins top Asian award
In football, Uzbekistan's midfielder Server Djeparov was crowned the 2008 AFC Player of the Year during a glittering award ceremony on Tuesday. Japan turned out to be the biggest winners on Tuesday with the East Asian nation taking top honors in five of the 13 categories although the Uzbek star emerged as Asia's finest football player ahead of Yasuhito Endo.

Veteran Olympic and world badminton champions retire
A ceremony was held to mark the retirement of six badminton players from the national team on the sidelines of the China Open badminton event in Shanghai on Sunday. The retired athletes include two-time Olympic champion Zhang Ning, two-time Olympic mixed doubles champion Gao Ling, Olympic doubles champions Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen, and world champions Wei Yili and Chen Yu. The 33-year-old veteran Zhang Ning, who won gold medals in Athens and Beijing, has become the coach of the national women's team.

US Fed, Treasury offer $800B more to credit markets US authorities launched fresh efforts on Tuesday to unfreeze credit and limit the economic downturn. The initiatives call for the Federal Reserve to buy up to $600 billion in mortgage securities, with another $200 billion allocated for asset-backed securities to help get credit to consumers.
