No Deaths from tick bites reported in GD
In the wake of the reports of 18 deaths by the tick bites in the province of Henan, people in Guangdong have been concerned similar cases might arise. The Guangdong Disease Control and Prevention Department assured the public that no cases have yet been reported and that hospitals across Guangdong have been asked to report immediately any findings related to the case. More from our reporter Chang Zhifeng:
Professor Wu Weinan from the Guangdong Institute of Entomology is an expert in the study of ticks. He said, what makes the tick fatal is that it can transmit a virus. Being beaten by a tick can lead to fever or even an organ failure if, for example, the patient was already suffering from a kidney or heart diseases. But Wu ended by saying that such cases are rare in South China.
"Ticks usually live in northern China. There are very few ticks in south China. They normally live in the moutains, grasslands and ranches, and be found amongst hoofed animals, such as horses and cows. "
In Henan, since May 2007, 18 people have died amongst 557 reported cases of suspected HGA (which stands for human granulocytic anaplasmosis). HGA reduces white blood cells in the blood, leading to organ failure and death. People in close contact with the patient can also be infected if no precautions are taken but the disease is curable if treated soon enough.
