Hu calls for more innovation, use of clean energy
Chinese President Hu Jintao called for more innovation and increased use of clean energy during a recent tour of Shenzhen, before he attended a celebratory rally marking the 30th anniversary of the country's first special economic zone. A major focus of Hu's two-day tour that ended Monday is Shenzhen's efforts in accelerating the transformation of economic growth pattern. At Tencent Inc., one China's largest Internet portals, Hu learned the company's 12,000 staff have an average age of only 27 years and that 85 percent of them have college degrees. Hu encouraged young people to innovate and contribute to the nation's Internet industry. Hu also visited the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology.


Regulations enacted to protect experimental animals
Guangdong will enact regulations to protect animals used for experimental or scientific purposes by ensuring that they are adequately cared for and that no unnecessary pain or suffering is inflicted upon them. The regulation will take effect beginning October 1st. Our journalist Luosu has the details:
The regulations stipulate that animals used for experiments must be given an anaesthetic and euthanasia must be performed. Director with Guangdong Experimental Animals Monitoring Institute Huang Ren said:
[record] we should concern about both the welfare and ethic issues of experimental animals. Just monitoring won't be enough. Self-discipline, monitoring and punishment must be used at the same time.


Japan envoy summoned over Diaoyu incident
China on Tuesday summoned the Japanese envoy to protest Japan's interception of a Chinese fishing boat in waters off the Diaoyu Islands. The Xinhua News Agency reported that Vice-Foreign Minister Song Tao summoned Japanese ambassador to China Niwa Uichiro to "lodge solemn representations". Jiang Yu, speaking at a regular news briefing, urged Japan to stop its so-called law enforcement in waters off the islands and refrain from taking any action that would threaten the security of Chinese fishing boats and their crew.
