SZ Celebrates its 30th Anniversary
Shenzhen marked the 30th anniversary of its creation as a special economic zone today (Sept 6th). Chinese President Hu Jintao, speaking at a rally in Shenzhen, said that the central government will always support the country's special economic zones (SEZ) embarking on "brave explorations" in their roles as "first movers." He said the Shenzhen special economic zone has made remarkable contributions to China's reform and opening up. Ma Huateng, the CEO of the Shenzhen-based Tengxun company, China's largest internet service provider, said that Shenzhen offers abundant opportunities for start-ups, and he was grateful for the city and for China's reform and opening up. Later, Li Ka-shing, the Chairman of Cheung Kong Limited, Hong Kong's richest man, also made a speech, saying the SEZ was the "driving force" of China's reform and opening-up. He said, "overseas Chinese have been heartened and convinced by the achievements of the country's reform and opening-up." A 30-minute firework display will be held tonight in Shenzhen and Zhuhai, two of the three SEZs in Guangdong.

Also known as a Moon Festival, it is a traditional family oriented festival held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar. Around 70% of tables have already been booked in major restaurants and hotels; however, supposedly due to inflating food prices this year, customers can expect to pay up to 20% more than last year.

The low season for travel has begun, leading to a significant decline in ticket prices. Departing from Guangzhou, passengers can enjoy up to 70% off on many flights. A ticket to Sanya on Hainan Island will put you back only 230Yuan, that's an 80% discount. However this shouldn't last long with prices expected to go up again with the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day Golden Week.
