GD Invested Big in Education over the Past Five Years
The Guangdong Finance Department yesterday (Sept 2nd) gave a report on the work accomplished in public education. During the 11th five year plan from 2006 to 2010, 6.7 billion yuan was allocated to send more students to high school. The gross entrance rate is thought to reach 85% by 2011. What¡¯s more, around 2.15 million students have received scholarships and student aid totals 1.6 billion yuan. Also during the 11th five-year plan, the department invested over 247.5 billion yuan into public education, the government¡¯s biggest public expenditure according to the department.

 

3000 Athletes Will Participate in the 2010 Asian Para Games
The Guangzhou Asian Para Games will take place from Dec. 12th to 19th and today (Sept 3rd) marks the 100 days. It is estimated that 3000 athletes will participate in the 19 disciplines. To encourage locale citizens to go and watch the games, access to all Asian Para Games events will be free.

 

GZ Gears up on improving Accessible facilities
Guangzhou is making more efforts to improve the access to public facilities for disabled people. Media were invited yesterday (Sep. 2nd) to experience the improvements.
To make it easier for the blind to take buses, a special system has been installed on 600 buses. When carrying a small sensor system, an individual senses a vibration and can hear the number of the bus approaching:
The Chairman of the Guangzhou Association of the Blind Mr. Chen Yang told us:
"500 more buses will have this system installed. These products will first be given to blind people from low income families. "
Wheelchair lifts have helped those on wheelchairs move conveniently inside the subway. A lady taking the metro with her handicapped son told us:
"it¡¯s ok, very convenient inside the metro. The metro staff always helps us.
To cater to the need of Asian Games audiences, the Olympic Sports Center will set up 350 easy-access seats and 34 toilets for the handicapped."
