China plans to list drink driving as crime
Drink driving and street racing have been written into a draft amendment to China's Criminal Law as crimes, part of the country's efforts to make the country's roads safer. The draft amendment was submitted today (August 23) to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, for its first reading. According to the draft, convicted drivers would face detention and fines even if their actions did not cause an accident. In 2009, the traffic police caught 313,000 people driving under the influence of alcohol. Drink driving and street racing have been heavily criticized by the public.

 

Tropical Storm causes torrential rainfall
A new tropical storm is gaining momentum and will likely land in Hainan later tonight (23rd). Western Guangdong will be affected with heavy rainstorms over the next 3 days. The Guangdong Drought and Flood Relief Headquarters have ordered all fishing boats to find shelter in the closest port.

 

Senior Citizens Get allowance for Shenzhen SEZ celebration
Senior Shenzhen citizens aged 80 or above will get an extra subsidy from the government beginning this month, thanks to a special policy to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Shenzhen¡¯s special economic zone. For those aging between 80 and 99, the standard is 200 yuan per month, whilst centenarians shall receive 500 yuan per month.

 

Public bikes help Guangzhou citizens live in low-carbon lifestyle
A total of 106 public bicycle rental points have been set up along the BRT line in Guangzhou. So far, the new rental service has expanded from Tianhe Park to areas surrounding Zhongshan Avenue, 5 times larger than in June when the service was launched. The traffic commission has announced that each day around 2700 people use one of the public bikes.
