180,000 Cantonese are expected to visit TW this year
A welcoming ceremony for the first group of participants in a program called "Guangdong tourists visiting Taiwan" was held in Taipei yesterday (August 16). It is a key event of the Taiwan-Guangdong Week. Our journalist Lihui reports from Taiwan:"
There are 2,500 tourists participating in this first trip and Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua revealed that more travelers are expected to visit Taiwan later this year.
"Over 10,000 more tourists will visit Taiwan from now until the end of this month. So altogether, that's 20,000 tourists in August alone. Last year, the number of Guangdong visitors to Taiwan reached 125,000, accounting for 1/5 of the Chinese mainland's total number of visitors to the island. This year the number is expected to exceed 180,000."
Currently, mainlanders can only travel to Taiwan in tour groups. One tourist hoped individual travel to Taiwan will be soon possible:
"it's more convenient to travel individually. So that we can stay as long as we like and see more scenic spots."
