Efforts to build new-typed villages
Source: Guangdong   Publish Date: 2008-1-21 16:32:00

Guangdong province made developing agriculture and rural

economy central to the building of new-typed socialism

villages with promulgation of Decision on Accelerating the

Building New Socialist Villages and supported measures. It

designated over 1,000 demonstration villages and contact

points.

The provincial treasure appropriated 14.6 billion yuan to help

address agriculture-related issues, registering an increase of

20% year on year. The agricultural production went up steadily

in the province. Farmers' professional cooperatives saw rapid

expansion and agricultural industrialization witnessed solid

progress. The pace-maker agriculture-based businesses totaled

1,724, benefiting 4,030,000 rural families that gained additional

annual income of 2,540 yuan for each. And the rural economy

had been reinvigorated with investment in the fixed assets and

total retail sales in the rural area registering the growth rate of

35.7% and 16.6% respectively, 22.6 and 1.2 percentage

points more than that in the urban area.

Achievement had been also made in the rural infrastructure and

social services. 7,000 kilometers of base-hardened road connecting

township with villages had been completed and 42,400 hectares of

low-yield farmland been improved. Efforts were also made to build

environment-friendly villages. And 110,000 low-income rural

households had been provided with housing. The rural residents

across the province had access to clean drinkable water.
